Making Space for Writing and Creative activities

WE ALL NEED a bit of space and time to ourselves now and then. As writers, keeping our creative energy flowing and balanced benefits the work and the rest of our living. If you feel like there isn’t a place, take another look. With a bit of creativity, you can find room to do your thing and revel in it!

Think about the activity you want to establish a little haven for. How much space do you need? And how, um, creative (messy) will it be? In other words, can you squeeze your special spot in the corner of a main room or should you go behind closed doors?

When will you put the space to use? This will help determine lighting and the noise factor (whether you’re making it or hiding from it!)

What storage or gear do you need to make it feasible? This can happen without great expense. Think purpose and repurpose to maximize your space.

Who else might need the space? If it’s quiet you seek but the space is shared, will earplugs and headphones work for noise reduction? Can you give each other alone time in the space?

Why not consider the overlooked places? An alcove or nook, spare corner or room where ‘stuff” is stored as well as a garage or a shed all have possibility.

CREATIVE GENIUS AT WORK!

Oftentimes we run out to a cafe or the library instead of writing at home. But if a productive, inspiring space in your home is the goal, small spaces can be very useful. A table and a chair. Small bins to keep pens or pads of paper in. Pin inspiration on a corkboard. Whether you write at the kitchen table or in a separate writing room, keep around you only what inspires your writing. Get rid of what distracts you. What else makes your creative space special? Have what’s fun and meaningful in your space — but not if it gets in the way of creating! Keep it low-key. Just the things that get your creative energy moving. Now, get out your writing implements and get to writing!

MOUNTAINS OF BOOKS MAKE YOU HAPPY?

Writers are readers. And for a reader, the book is the thing. And curling up in just the right spot makes it even better — so make it comfy. A rocking chair in the corner? A chaise lounge in a quiet room? The hammock in your backyard?

If time alone with a book is just the thing to make you happy, your needs are simple. Good lighting, a small table to hold a mug, and a blanket… maybe that old crocheted one from childhood or a fuzzy fleece.

SPACE TO QUIET THE MIND AND BODY

Yoga, meditation, prayer, or just chilling alone… perfect for writers and perfect for nooks and crannies — out of the way with just enough room to keep your seat or mat ready for your next session.

Ornamental objects you use in this space can accentuate the ambiance…but simplicity is key. Think practical AND lovely. A beautifully carved box can be helpful for tucking items away when not in use. Candles or incense can ease you into the moment.
